Round Table: Banality of Racism
On December 17, 2008 the round table ”Banality of Racism“ will take place in the framework of the joint project of the city of Aachen and Aachen’s universities against racism and xenophobia (17.00h -18.30h, SuperC). The term racism is often used in the context of violence against ”foreigners“ and right-wing extremism. However this round table focuses on the various constructions of ”Germans“ versus ”foreigners“ in our everyday life. How are these differences between ”us“ and ”them“ generated? Workshop ”Excellent Cooperation of Science and Economy for Female Junior Executives“
The competence centre "Technik-Diversity-Chancengleichheit e.V, Bielefeld“(registered association "Technology-Diversity-Equal Opportunity"), organises a workshop on behalf of the Ministry of North Rhine-Westphalia for Generations, Family, Women and Integration and in co-operation with RWTH Aachen on December 5, 2008. The workshop provides a platform for the exchange of experiences and new ideas on effective strategies for the attraction of female technical specialists. The contents of the lectures and discussions focus primarily on the interface between study and career as well as on the co-operation of science and economy.
During the World Café Elke Breuer co-moderates table 1 on the topic "Central Gender- and Diversity Management – Future Concepts for Universities".

Workshop ”Acknowledging Diversity – Finding Similarities: Gender and Diversity as Key Competencies“
The Integration Team conducts a one day gender and diversity workshop for doctoral students from the Center of Doctoral Studies. The workshop focuses on the conveyance of knowledge on differences and similarities which exist in organisations and the society; in particular it raises the question how members of an organisation deal with diversity. Friendly Game against Discrimination and Xenophobia
The joint initiative of Aachen’s universities, the city of Aachen and Alemannia Aachen (Aachen’s premier soccer club) speaks out against racism and xenophobia in the region of Aachen. Aachen’s universities engage insistently for moral courage of their students and employees. Through different activities within the next weeks and months, the institutions want to raise awareness on exclusion and discrimination in studies, workplace and sports as well as to disclose various scopes of positive actions.
The kick-off of the initiative marks the event „Freundschaftsspiel“ (“Friendly Game”) on November 26, 2008 at 4.00h at the SuperC. Selected players from Alemannia Aachen will compete against student players in a “human” version of table soccer. Additionally the exhibition “Ballarbeit” (“Ballwork”) will be opened and a discussion round on “Fair Play - im Stadion und auf dem Campus" (“Fair Play – in the stadium and on campus”) will take place.

Network Meeting Forum Mentoring
The next network meeting from the mentoring association Forum Mentoring takes place at Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt. RWTH Aachen University’s mentoring programmes is also represented at this venue. At the network meeting, Ms. Beate Schmidt from human resources development at Fraport AG, presents the in house mentoring programme of Fraport AG and emphasises the importance of cooperation with universities. TANDEM: Assessment Centre Training
The Mentees of the mentoring programme TANDEM will participate in an assessment centre training from November
21-22, 2008. At first the participants will be introduced to the method and have the chance to discuss the
procedure. However, the main focus of the training lies on practical exercises (e.g. group discussion,
presentation, role performance), as they are helpful to prepare the participants for future career challenges.
Since Assessment centers are used frequently as a recruitment or human resources development strategy, this
training serves specifically as a preparation for a possible career entry (Gitta Doebert).
