TANDEMschool

Logo of mentoring programme TANDEMschool

Due to the shortage in skilled labourers in technical professions, high school students are offered a wide range of promising job perspectives for the future. For that reason RWTH Aachen wants to increase the proportion of qualified students in the so-called MINT subjects, namely Mathematics, Information Technology, Natural Science and Technology subjects significantly and in particular encourage young women to study one of the subjects mentioned before.

In the framework of the MINT-Initiative, RWTH Aachen University established the mentoring programme TANDEMschool in order to give interested students the opportunity to gain insight into the specifics of Mathematics, Engineering, Natural Science and Technology. They are able to accompany students or PhD students of RWTH Aachen and gain valuable knowledge of corresponding fields of studies and professions. Hereby RWTH Aachen provides the prospective students with a professional study orientation and planning, and facilitates the transition from high school to university.

TANDEMschool is part of RWTH Aachen’s Institutional Strategy which is funded in the framework of the German Excellence Initiative by the German Research Foundation.

Contents

The project TANDEMschool addresses high school students from 11th grade onwards who are interested in studying a subject of Mathematics, Engineering, Natural Science and Technology. Every participant will be assigned a mentor - at first for the period of one year - who are selected according to the interests and wishes of the mentees. The mentors are specifically trained students from higher semesters or PhD students of RWTH Aachen.

Modules

Mentoring: Main objective is the intensive professional and personal exchange between mentee and mentor, e.g. email contact or personal meetings.

Inspiration: Through insights into the research and science at RWTH Aachen as well as the participation in events in the framework of the programme, mentees are able to strengthen their interest in Mathematics, Engineering, Natural Science and Technology and discover opportunities on how to shape their own professional future in these fields.

Networking: At shared activities and regular network meetings, the mentees and mentors get to know other people with same interests.

Training: The mentees take part in Summer and Winter Universities which are offered twice a year at RWTH Aachen. These universities offer theoretic courses as well as specific internships for applied scientific subjects.
