Tohoku University was founded in 1907 is located in Sendai, a city in the northeastern part of Japan. With 1.7 million residents, Sendai is the largest city in the region and resides in the Miyagi prefecture.

Thanks to the rhombic street network, Sendai is very clearly laid out and leaves one wanting little more. Tohoku University is the largest university in Sendai with about 16000 students. It is distributed among five different campuses depending on studies and academic year. These are located near each other and can be easily reached with the bus. Tohoku University is one of the most reputable public universities, especially in the natural sciences. The university also has particularly good academics in mechanical engineering and materials sciences, as Tohoku is the third best university worldwide for these subjects. Additionally, it is among the top universities for physics and chemistry.
